News : GRID Alternatives Receives Renewable Energy World Award

3/11/2011:  GRID Alternatives was honored with a 2011 Excellence in Renewable Energy Award for Innovation in Policy earlier this week at the Renewable Energy World North America Conference & Expo held in Tampa, Florida.

GRID Alternatives was selected for the Innovation in Policy award for its program model and implementation of the Single-family Affordable Solar Homes (SASH) Program. The SASH program is the nation’s first solar incentive program dedicated exclusively for low-income families and is managed by GRID Alternatives on behalf of the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Solar Initiative.

The 2011 Excellence in Renewable Energy Awards are presented by the editors of RenewableEnergyWorld.com and Renewable Energy World North America magazine.  These awards recognize the most outstanding projects, programs, technologies and leaders in the wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and hydroelectric sectors.  After reviewing almost 600 submissions over a three-month period of time, the editors chose one award winner in eleven respective categories.

In addition to providing aggressive solar rebate incentives, the SASH program has been structured to promote or provide energy efficiency, workforce development and green jobs training opportunities, and broad community engagement with low-income communities.

"GRID Alternatives is honored to be recognized by Renewable Energy World for the work we are doing with the State of California to make solar accessible to low-income families," said Erica Mackie, GRID Alternatives Executive Director. "The SASH program GRID Alternatives manages is a model for policymakers and regulators across the country on how to bring renewable energy to low-income communities while integrating energy education and job training.”
