June 9-17, 2018: Solar Home Systems in El Regadio, Nicaragua

In June, GRID Alternatives is working with families in El Regadio, Nicaragua to build a brighter future! Our staff and Nicaraguan participants who are interested in building their skills to enter the renewable energy industry will install solar home systems for 15 households in the rural community. Since 2008, GRID Alternatives’ International Program has been working in off-grid communities throughout Nicaragua to install solar on schools, health clinics, small farms, and homes. Access to clean solar energy impacts education, health, and quality of life for people living in poverty in rural communities.

GRID Alternatives was introduced to the El Regadio community by a GRID Alternatives client homeowner in Richmond, CA whose family is from this community in Nicaragua, which lies in the north central region of Jinotega in Nicaragua. Jinotega is known for its cool climate, its mountainous terrain, and its ideal conditions for growing coffee. Most families in the community make their living through agriculture, growing crops and raising cattle.

Many families use kerosene or diesel lamps in their homes to see at night, even if they are aware that they are at risk for respiratory illnesses, because it is the least expensive option. These lighting solutions do not provide the quality families desire and are expensive and hazardous to use. You will install solar home systems that provide each household with light and AC power outlets so families can use regular home appliances like lamps, cell phones, TVs, computers, and fans.

GRID Alternatives worked with the community in July 2017 to install an off-grid solar system on their local school, and again in October 2017 to install 20 solar home systems. This project will be our third to further electrify El Regadio and unlock new opportunities!
