Solarthon 2008 - Event Details

SOLARTHON 2008 will be held on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 from 8:30 to 4:30 at Habitat for Humanity East Bay's Buena Vista Commons development in the City of Alameda. Click here for a printable map with directions and the day's schedule of events. Food, drink, water and all tools will be provided.

GRID Alternatives staff, with help from our network of volunteer contractors, will be leading teams of corporate sponsors and individual fundraisers to install solar electric systems for eight low-income homeowners on this green-built development for low-income families earning between 40% and 60% of the area median income. Many of the new homeowners will be working alongside the event participants to help install these solar electric systems.

No technical skills or previous experience are required to participate in this event - the only requirement is that individual fundraisers raise a minimum of $350 to support GRID Alternatives' work bringing renewable energy to communities in need throughout California.

Participants who have not previously completed one of our mandatory volunteer trainings in the past need to attend one of our trainings prior to the event, which provide an overview of how solar energy works, how it is installed, and the safety protocols that we follow. GRID Alternatives has scheduled a pre-event training for Thursday, June 5th from 6pm to 9pm at GRID Alternatives' offices at 1610 Harrison Street in Downtown Oakland - see Contact Us for a map and directions. Refreshments will be provided.

Participants will have the opportunity to participate in installation activities both on the ground and on the roofs of the homes if they so choose. All roof activities are fully supervised by experienced professionals, and roof participants will wear safety harnesses at all times.
