Going solar with GRID

GRID Alternatives' Solar Affordable Housing Program provides solar electric systems for qualifying low-income homeowners at no or very low cost. These systems, sized to meet 75-90% of your energy needs, are installed by GRID Alternatives licensed construction staff leading teams of volunteers and job trainees who are interested in gaining new skills and participating in their communities. Where our volunteer model is not practical, we may subcontract the installation to one of the highly qualified solar installers we partner with. Each home also undergoes an energy efficiency audit and clients are connected with local energy efficiency services. GRID Alternatives handles the whole process, start to finish, from guiding clients through the application, to systems installation and design, to submitting interconnection paperwork to the local utility. Explore the links below or contact tk local contact to see if you qualify.

Meet some of our clients

The Lopez family of Oroville has three children, a very old home, and medical bills. Their home is poorly insulated which leads to very high utility bills, and Mary Lopez, the mother, is battling a brain tumor. After experiencing cut-backs to her medical insurance, she has had to share costs of her cancer treatment. GRID was able to install a 4.6 kW system (21 panels) and Mary is happily using her solar savings to help pay for her cancer treatment.

"I was so happy to see how much I would be saving on my electrical bills because I wasn't sure how I could afford treatment," said Mary. "GRID has really helped our family in a direct way, and it's nice to think that we're also helping the environment."

Ronald Staus is paralyzed from the neck down and needs a lot of medical equipment to stay healthy. Although he has a live-in caretaker, he insisted on signing the contract for his new 5.3 kW system (25 panels) on his own, skillfully holding the pen in his mouth. Ronald was very grateful that GRID was able to install solar on his home.

"I was so thankful that GRID Alternatives was able to help with my electrical costs that I gave back and donated my very first month of savings with the new system," he said.
