Young Professionals in Energy Merges Networking with Social Good

As an epicenter for renewable energy enthusiasts and professionals, it is unsurprising that the Bay Area hosts a popular local chapter of the national networking group, Young Professionals in Energy (YPE). More surprising, perhaps, is their commitment to merge networking with social good. Not only did a team of 17 YPE members come out early on a Saturday and Sunday to install a solar PV system for a family in need, but they also raised nearly $9,000 from their networks to help offset the cost of the installation and support GRID Alternatives!

As the top fundraiser for the install, and a member of YPE’s Leadership Team, Colin Law says YPE seeks to provide members the opportunity to interact out of the office. “With GRID,” says Colin, “you’re able to come out and work as a team for a tangible outcome.” Especially for those in the industry, he shares, “it’s great to come out, get my hands dirty, and put modules on the roof!”

Those modules directly help Louisa, a single-mother of three, who was thrilled to have the YPE team out to help her go solar. “I have three teenagers and they consume immense amounts of energy! Our solar system (as well as the energy efficiency we've learned from GRID) will help us with energy savings.”

Louisa joined YPE members for the weekend and provided lunch. Amy Kochanowsky, the YPE representative who helped organize this event with GRID says, “What a fun and rewarding experience: we each got great hands-on experience and a unique opportunity to work alongside the homeowner on the installation to see our impact in action.” To share in the experience, you can visit our album with photos from the day.

Thank you for helping GRID bring solar to another Bay Area rooftop, YPE!
