Information for Prospective Clients

The Solar Affordable Housing Program currently works with the following local jurisdictions to install solar electric systems for existing homeowners:

  • City of Concord

  • City of El Monte
  • City of Livermore
  • City of Pleasanton
  • City and County of San Francisco
    • Bayview/Hunter’s Point (94124 zip code) and Potrero (94107 zip code) Neighborhoods only
  • County of San Mateo
    • All areas outside of incorporated Daly City, Redwood City, the City of San Mateo, and South San Francisco
  • City of South El Monte
  • City of South Gate

In order to participate in the Solar Affordable Housing Program, you must be a resident of one of these municipalities. If your community is not listed but you would like information on what you can do to work towards making your community a future recipient, please contact us directly.

We also work with nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity to install solar electric systems on new homes – in these cases the homeowners do not apply to our program directly, but receive the program directly from the nonprofit building their home. Please contact us or visit our partners page if you work with a housing developer building affordable for-sale homes and would like more information about partnering with GRID Alternatives.

If you live in one of our current recipient communities, the first step to determining whether you may qualify is to answer the following four questions:

  • Do you own your home?

  • Do you have less than $25,000 in liquid assets (savings account, cash, etc.)?
  • Is your roof unshaded, and either flat or pitched to the south/southwest?
  • Is your total household income less than these limits?
    • $39,600 for a family of 1
    • $45,250 for a family of 2
    • $50,900 for a family of 3
    • $56,550 for a family of 4
    • $61,050 for a family of 5
    • $65,600 for a family of 6
    • $70,100 for a family of 7

(2006 income limits for San Francisco - please contact us for the limits in your area).

If you answered yes to all of these questions, you may qualify to participate in the Solar Affordable Housing Program. To learn more about the program and begin the application process, please contact us for more information.
