Interfaith organization helps spread solar

Interfaith Power and Light (IPL), a national interfaith organization dedicated to the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy, is partnering with GRID Alternatives to help us bring the benefits of solar to more families. With a network of nearly 700 congregations in California alone, the organization will provide outreach and education within its network to identify families that qualify for our Solar Affordable Housing Program.

IPL has over a decade of experience helping congregations address global warming by being better stewards of energy. According to Program Director the Rev. Will Scott, the partnership with GRID was inspired in part by Pope Francis’ recent call for “an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.”

“IPL's partnership with GRID Alternatives helps us ‘practice what we preach’ and live into our commitment to protect the earth’s ecosystems, safeguard the health of all Creation, and ensure sufficient, sustainable energy for all,” Scott says. “We are excited to encourage congregations to get involved in bringing solar power to low-income homeowners across California and beyond.”

California Interfaith Power and Light is already providing resources to congregations for energy efficiency improvements and solar installation, and is active in statewide and local policy advocacy, so the partnership is a natural fit.

"The faith community is a natural partner in our efforts to create a successful transition to clean, renewable energy that includes everyone,” notes Miguel Reza, GRID Alternatives’ Director of Outreach. “We couldn't be more proud to be partnering with Interfaith Power and Light, who are true leaders in advancing our nation's efforts to combat climate change."

In addition to helping low-income families among IPL’s congregations and larger community networks access solar, GRID and IPL hope to bring congregations together to volunteer for installations in their communities, and to learn more about energy efficiency. Look for the action to start during Faith Climate Action Week this April. Learn more about how you can get involved.
