“The only thing I pay for is gas,” says Huey Jones, “so I just enjoy myself.” Huey, elderly homeowner and longtime resident of Richmond, CA, got solar on his home in 2010 through GRID Alternatives. Huey has a lot of youthful energy for a man in his 80's, and when he noticed something curious going on in his neighborhood, he didn't miss the opportunity to get in on the action. “I seen they put it up on my neighbor’s house, and all the people coming around taking pictures, and I’m nosy you know, I wanted to find out what was going on.” says Huey of his first glimpse of a GRID install. He started asking questions, made some new friends, and soon enough there were panels on his own home, too. “I usually break even at the end of the year on my electric bill,” says Huey, “and there hasn’t been a whole lot of rain. Like today it’s supposed to be raining out, but see the sun shining? I’m making money."
